So this seems to be pretty nice... Imagemagick is the bomb... using the convert script that comes with imagemagick makes it fairly easy to create dynamic text and effect using a php script... here is the imagemagick command:

convert -size 550x60 xc:transparent -font FONTNAME -pointsize 32 -draw "text 15,45 'TEXT'" -channel RGBA -gaussian 0x6 -fill grey -stroke black -draw "text 10,40 'TEXT'" IMAGELOCATION
